The Rhodes Show Returns To The Stage
Can YOU name a family who can say they’ve made music with Jack Benny, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Al Green, The Bee Gees, James Taylor, Garth Brooks, Isaac Hayes, Craig Morgan, Donny and Marie Osmond, Tim McGraw, Neil Diamond, Conway Twitty, , Kenny Rogers, The Commodores, Dolly Parton and many, many more?
Since the early 1930’s, The Rhodes Show, (Originating with Slim, Speck, Dusty and Bea Rhodes) has entertained audiences nationwide.
On June 22nd at the West Plains, Missouri Civic Center, The Rhodes Show officially begins its full-time return to the stage with Sandra and Donna Rhodes, daughters of Dusty and Dot Rhodes, Brenda “Bear” Barnett, who joined the family show in 1980, Craig Morris (Donna’s husband) and their children, Savannah and Sam.
In the 1930’s and 1940’s, The Rhodes Show toured extensively nationwide, but saturated Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Kentucky and Tennessee. They had regular radio programs on WMC-AM in Memphis, Tennessee and KWOC in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, then jumped to television in 1948, starring in shows in Jonesboro, Arkansas (The Hillbilly Hootenanny) Little Rock, Arkansas, Cape Girardeau, Missouri and finally on Memphis station WMCT for a 28 year run, ending in 1976. Speck went on to work as a comedian on The Porter Wagoner Show for a number of years.
The Rhodes Show quietly dissolved as a full-time show in the mid-1970’s, as Sandy and Donna began an impressive career singing harmonies on recording sessions in Memphis, Tennessee, Muscle Shoals, Alabama, New York, Los Angeles, Nashville, Tennessee and Miami, Florida. You can hear their voices on recordings by Elvis (Suspicious Minds, In The Ghetto), The Bee Gees (Rest Your Love On Me), Al Green (Let’s Stay Together) B.J. Thomas (Hooked On A Feeling) among many others.
Craig and Donna met and sang harmony together on TNN’s (The Nashville Network) NASHVILLE NOW Country Variety Show, hosted by Ralph Emery. They were married in 1991. Craig has toured with acts from Donny and Marie Osmond to Dobie Gray and has written songs for Ray Charles, Reba McEntire, Gene Watson, The Oak Ridge Boys and Craig Morgan. Craig currently tours with country legend, Loretta Lynn, playing piano and singing harmonies.
What might you expect at a performance of The Rhodes Show? Classic and modern country, Memphis R & B, top hits from the 50′s, 60′ and 70′s and original songs written by the band that you’ll recognize the instant you hear them. Oh, and a visit from comedian, Sister Lotta Miles. She tells it like it is, and it IS always funny!
