Free WiFi On Main Street Hardy – Anyone?

(Originally Published Jun 16, 2010) With the talk from City Hall about bringing WiFi to Dr. Thompson Park we thought we would repost our original story about Free Wifi.

Why even offer Free WiFi (muniwireless) along Main Street in Hardy Arkansas?  The only  thing that retains value is what the local community is willing to invest in terms of their interest and content. If local businesses, organizations, civic groups and schools  in the local community, in short, are willing to create local content for the local network, post local ads, if they see the service as part of the fabric of the community. That is part of the idea of Free muniwirelessWiFi, because our idea – would first point all users to the Main Street Hardy Online Resource website. This then helps promote not only the town but the local merchants and community as well. Is this self serving? Not really, its self promoting of our town ! Besides, if we don’t do it, no one else will.

Shake, Rattle and Roll

Okay, maybe just the shake and rattle! This past Sunday you might of felt a little tremor under foot.  A 4.7 magnitude earthquake shook central Arkansas late Sunday night, and was felt as far away as Memphis.  It was followed by a 3.8 magnitude temblor a short time later.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake was centered approximately 36 miles north of Little Rock, approximately 150 miles from Memphis.

Many support sites exist to assist news/media outlets, but we wanted a source for the individual citizens who too, need a place to go when they feel their rights to public records and access are being either hindered or outright denied. The online site will offer guidance and support to you in your quest for public information.

Shop Hardy Arkansas – Online!

In today’s tough economy small town business owners are constantly looking for creative and affordable ways to find buyers for their products and services. With Hardy, Ar. having a population just under 800 it is that much more difficult to run a profitable business.

Many of the Main Street area merchants are geared toward our tourist and travelers just taking time to pause in Hardy. But does that mean you can only make sales when your doors are open? We here at the Main Street Hardy Online website think not!

Data Backup – System Secure !?

In a recent story posted on the Mayor’s personal website, we noticed a story in regards to a incident with a power outage on Friday Jan. 21, 2011. In her story, the Mayor reported on the sudden outage due to a problem on the utility pole at the intersection of Woodland Hills and Forty Island Creek Bridge. This resulted in a loss of power at City Hall and at the sewage plant too. It was good to read about the quick response and plan of action of city employee’s in regards to getting the power back online and following a plan of action too.

History Of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

While Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, TN, it took until 1983 for Martin Luther King day to become a holiday. The history behind MLK Day and how did it become a holiday is a story of persistence.

Congressman John Conyers of Michigan was the first person to propose legislation for a commemorative holiday honoring the peace and freedom fighter King. He began his push for the holiday shortly after the assassination and re-submitted the request each legislative year. Public pressure finally took hold in 1982 and 1983 with civil marches in Washington. Congress passed the legislation and President Ronald Reagan signed it into law November 2, 1983. The compromise that was made to give it more favor was moving the date from January 15th, King’s birthday, to the third Monday in January. This gave more space between New Year’s Day and the holiday.
